THE BIRDS
THE BIRDS is a comedic duet exploring different behaviours of birds, specifically following the tale of two magpies. The work uses physical comedy, movement and clown as the audience observes a pair of birds through the life cycle of birth, puberty, mating and death. The work features AM Choreography’s continued interest in creating physical theatre/comedy work, featuring well loved music and many costume changes.
In this egg-citing episode of YEG Nature, a local “flock-umentary,” follow a unique pair as they grow from awkward hatchlings to seductive, groove-dropping mating machines—all in the name of evolution. In the wild, it’s flirt or die!
From the creator of Funny Beyond Words (Fringe 2024), this physical comedy is full of flair and feathery fun!

History
Anastasia Maywood and Krista Lin met in Toronto during their performance studies in the early 2000s, and solidified their artistic collaboration in Edmonton 2014, when they first created and produced together. They have been creating for the stage, together and apart, for over 30 years combined.
Anastasia and Krista started development of this work in June 2024. Inspired by the parallels between human mating rituals and bird dance courtship, as well as the trials and tribulations of life and death, THE BIRDS was hatched. The initial creation period was funded by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. The piece has gone through many iterations, with different sections being presented at Mile Zero Dance’s Collisions//Connections Cabaret in late 2024 and a clown showcase cabaret (facilitated by Small Matters Theatre/Christine Lesiak) in early 2025. AM Choreography is very excited to premiere the full length piece in the 2025 Edmonton Fringe.
